Shark
Fishing - Know Your Opponent and His Habits!
The
world's most relentless predatory machine and the
historic and future tip top of the oceanic food chain --
the shark, with its deservedly fierce reputation, is now
the favorite meal of the supreme predator of the oceans,
the sport fishing boat. The middle class has adopted
big-game fishing as a weekend activity on par with beach
vacations and barbeques, and the shark has emerged as a
favorite target, especially in northeastern waters. Its
fearsome meat-eating style spurs the urge of the great
North American game fisherman to prove his or her mettle
before this creature of the deep that lacks even the
remote existence of the power of reason -- but would,
nevertheless, look darn impressive on a basement wall.
The shark is widely available to the sport of fishing
with its omnivorous appetite that shows little
discrimination for artificially rigged bait. The result
is booming shark sport fishing featuring many
tournaments and contests, and bringing to the dock
thousands of blues, makos, tiger sharks and bull sharks
ready to be "steak cut" or filleted for a
weekend barbeque of fishermen telling their heavy-tackle
submission stories exaggerated to the degree of a
low-budget science fiction film.
For
the most part, we are covering the more common and
widely available sharks here, but what applies to these
more common sharks also applies to the more regional
species such as the great white, hammerhead, bull shark,
white tip and black tip. The common blue shark is
the most numerous of popular game shark fishing found in
North America, which include makos, tigers, whites, and
hammerheads. Sport fishermen will also fish for others
but the species discussed here are runaway favorites for
their size, ferocity, and availability.

Sharks
Dominate the Seas:
The
shark dominates the seas because it does one thing very
well: It attacks food and eats it. Ironically the shark
is the easiest of the big-game catches because it can't
stop eating. Shark do not discriminate -- wherever food
is available, they will show up first, attack first, and
eat the fastest. For the fisherman or shark boat captain
this means he can use most any bait, either live or
dead, on large obvious hooks with strong but easily seen
steel leaders -- the sharks just don't care.
